Music at St Catherine's is a thriving department and is led by two music specialists. Music is highly valued at the school and believes it greatly enhances a child's learning and promotes confidence. All pupils are taught by qualified music teachers, and are taught to read traditional notation from an early age. Performing opportunities include 2 large-scale productions, a large music concert, two terms of free instrumental tuition, the Christmas Carol concert every year, with other smaller performances taking place in community activities.

CHOIR - Our popular choir has over 50 pupils (nearly half of KS2) and is open to all who want to sing. They rehearse once a week during PPA time and they have plenty of performance opportunities throughout the year, including their own large-scale musical, Carol concert, whole school musical and the music concert.
HARMONY GROUP - Open by audition only. The Harmony Group sing more challenging repertoire and promotes more solo opportunities and harmony skills
PERCUSSION GROUP - Our Samba / African group rehearse around 2 term's a year and teaches pupils more challenging skills. It also reinforces pupil awareness of world music. (max. 20 pupils)
FREE INSTRUMENTAL TUITION - We believe in providing every child with free instrumental tuition for 2 terms, led by an isntrumental specialist. This group then perform their pieces in the music concert each year (1 whole year group)
KEYBOARD CLUB - Provides children with the basics of reading and playing the keyboard, reinforcing rhythm and pitch reading (max. 12 pupils)
MUSIC TECHNOLOGY and COMPOSING - As well as providing music technology in year 6, a few pupils are given the opportunity to learn how to sequence their music on current music software. They also learn to compose songs using word-setting, learning to compose a melody line using a variety of methods, e.g. sequences, and how to structure a piece and develop this further. Pupils are given the opportunity to perform their pieces in the music concert each year.
Instruments currently offered: violin, piano, guitar and drums, We will shortly be introducing flute lessons to the school.
Every year the choir stage a large-scale musical of their own (in addition to the whole-school musical). These shows provide pupils lower down the school with performance experience (acting, singing and dancing). All our shows are accompanied by live musicians (not backing tracks), and nurtures co-ordination and performance skills from an early age.

Auditions for our brand new musical will be on Thursday 24th April, Tuesday 29th April and Thursday 1st May. All choir members will automatically be in the large cast numbers, and main parts by audition only. Main parts rehearse every week for 2 terms after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Pupils need to book an audition time on the music notice board. All other details can be seen here also.
